The Ultimate Blake & Bull Baking Guide - A Journey

This is the start of our journey to compile, create, and taste recipes together as we explore the world of baking in a range cooker!

Our work is enriched daily by our Blake & Bull community input, knowledge & enthusiasm.

When we sat down to start compiling the Blake & Bull guide to baking in a range cooker, the natural source for real life experience and tried an tested methods, was you lovely lot!

We are already super lucky to have advice and tips from the eminent Sarah Whitaker in our arsenal, and even more so now to have @stevecooksmakesbakes and Christine on board!

Steve and Christine are home cooks, practiced bakers, and explorers of food, all created in their range cookers. One a 4 oven mains gas, and the other a 2 oven with electric module.

First on the list to explore...

Steve's tip with any new or unfamiliar cooker is "make a Victoria Sandwich - you’ll soon learn the hot spots, baking times etc!"

Steve adores baking, we asked him how he got started and who most inspires him -

"I grew up in a family where home baking and cooking were normal activities.  As a family, we did not eat much processed food.  Early memories are helping along, stirring, mixing, rolling out etc - often wobbling away standing on a chair with a tea towel wrapped around me.  Learning to bake/cook was organic - it was a learned life skill as much as learning to talk, write, read etc."

"The majority of my cooking and baking is legacy or inherited recipes from my family.  Other than that, Nigella is a huge favourite as I find most of her recipes give tasty and interesting results for a minimum of fuss.  Equally Mary Berry and Delia. If I can’t remember a standard procedure or ratios of something, I have an ancient Marguerite Patten baker book that includes Blue Print recipes for what I call the frameworks - such as different pastries, cake methods, sauces etc. I have a huge collection of cookery books which I reference, especially before a big dinner party or celebration.  But I always use recipes as guidelines and repeated recipes get adapted according to my tastes and experience with them."

Hop on over to our first recipe The Ultimate Victoria Sponge for range cookers, what ingredients to use, and how to cook it!

Send in your photos, let us know how you get on!

Thank you so much Steve, and welcome!

After studying ‘drawing stuff’ at university in Bath, Katy spent 10 years selling wares and managing folk at Habitat in Bath. Welcoming children into her world prompted her to return to drawing things, people and places from home. This led her to us at Blake & Bull and the rest is history. She draws our stuff, provides cuddles for the office dog, and is here to chat to you lovely lot.
