Toasty Homemade Crumpets

My kids go through breakfast craving phases, this month is crumpets! Crumpets with jam, oozing with butter and pleasingly bubbly. I am a marmite girl myself, but being 10 and 5 they are all about the sweet stuff! You will need to leave an hour prep time, so this is a brunch or lazy weekend breakfast recipe, or perfect for afternoon tea after a dog walk, prep your batter first!

This recipe is perfect for cooking on a simmering plate, with a liner or a cast iron griddle. Our Baking Clocheis dual purpose, you can use the tray on it's own, as a griddle. Pre-warm it in the oven to hot, and then cook your crumpets on the simmering plate!

This recipe is the perfect fit for our Baking Cloche & Simmering Spot

You may need...

Ingredients...

  • 1 Sachet of dried yeast
  • ½ A tsp of baking powder
  • 240ml Warmed milk (you can do this on the back of your hob)
  • 300ml Of warm (not hot) water
  • A chunk, around 25g of melted salted butter - the best that you can buy
  • 1-2 Tsp of sea salt
  • 2 Tsp of caster sugar
  • 470g Of plain or strong flour

 Right, lets get cooking!

1. Set the Butter In a bowl on the back of the cooker to melt.

2. Sift the dry ingredients into a large bowl.

3. Pop your yeast in 240ml of the water and let it sit and bubble happily whilst you have a cuppa! About 10-15 mins... easy so far eh!

4. Pour this into a large bowl and add your milk, sugar, sifted flour, and melted butter. Beat well, which will take some arm power, until it has made a smooth paste. Leave for around 30 mins to rise up. Whilst you are waiting - set your cast iron griddle to warm in the oven, dissolve your baking powder in 60ml of water, and lightly oil or butter 4 crumpet rings / plain cookie cutters

5. Mix your baking powder water into your batter and beat until you have a 'double cream consistency'. Leave the mix for another 20 mins..

6. Now you are ready to cook! Pop your liner or griddle on the hotplate and position your buttered rings on it. Spoon fill each ring half way, remembering which order you place them, as this is the 'flipping order'!

7. Watch the top for bubbles, and then after the bubbles comes a 'firmness' to the edges that will travel across the surface, this is when you attempt to flip and not before! Each one will take about 10 mins on the first side, 5 to finish off once flipped!

This is a luxury hotplate wise, using around 15 mins to cook. why not try transferring the griddle back into the roasting oven to cook them through once the first side is done? Let me know how you get on!
