The Running Costs of 'Electrikit' powered Aga range cookers | Reconditioned 'e-COOK' or Converted

One of the selling points of electric Aga range cookers is their lower running costs than 'fossil fuel' versions, but different electrical systems can vary greatly.....

The 'Electrikit' system powers our 'eCook' reconditioned Aga range cookers and conversions that we complete on-site. We make a few custom modifications to this system based on the experience we have with our huge install base.

If you choose to run the ovens and hotplates flat out 24hrs a day all year round (fully in 'traditional' mode) then you'll still save money over an oil or gas Aga range cooker but we can do better!

How Much Does an Electric Aga Range Cooker Cost to Run? It's all about how you use them

Where things really change is when you start using the flexibility that 'Electrikit' gives you. For instance it's inconceivable that you'd leave the hotplates on all the time.

For background warmth you need only the ovens; you may as well leave the hotplates off till you need them. This is an enormous saving even with ovens left on permanently.

But remember the ovens are flexible too! In the summer, when you don't need any background heat in the kitchen, you could turn on when you need them with a little forward planning.

In the autumn you may wish to run them on low and turn up when you need them. In the winter by all means leave those ovens on so they are always ready for action, warming the kitchen and drying all those soggy clothes!

The real world savings

All of this combined means very big savings on running a traditional cooker.

We think most users will find it costs, at current £ per kwh, between £700-£900 a year to run an 'Electrikit' cooker, whether converted or purchased from us reconditioned. This is £13.46 - £17.08 per week. {it could be less or a little more, its really all down to how you use it!}

Different tariffs, variable thermal properties in homes, how you use it and how often, and the condition of converted Aga range cookers all contribute to the final figure. We always recommend a mini-refurb/deep clean alongside any conversion to make sure the doors and lids are insulated effectively.

No servicing is required and no infrastructure maintenance either (oil tanks & lines etc). 4 oven cookers rarely cost any more to run than 2 oven models because the left hand ovens can be used only when needed.

If you have a gas cooker it is costing you up to £35 per week (LPG)  and oil £25. I'll leave you to consider the money you could save over the many years one owns a Aga range cooker!

What do owners think?

We asked our community to estimate their annual running costs in our 2019 'BIG' survey! The responses were averaged and you can see below how large the difference is between the best and worst performers.

Particularly interesting is the difference between the running costs of electric Aga range cookers. Note how the old-fashioned single element '13amp' systems are almost the most expensive to run with the new 'TC' systems roughly the same as our own 'Electrikit' system. Electric Aga range cooker running costs
