How Much Does it Cost to Run an Aga?

There is an appetite for accurate Aga running cost data across all fuel types. The reality is that an Aga range cooker is not a radiator, heating a defined space to a set heat, at a set time. You put stuff in an Aga range cooker, and the rate that you do that changes in size and frequency!

Your habits, how you use the your cooker, whether you turn it off in the summer and many more have the biggest effects on running costs after fuel price and quality of insulation etc.

The other big variable is of course the cooker type – both in terms of the model, fuel used and number of ovens.

These comparisons of the three main fuel types for Aga range cookers are based on the UK energy costs set by Ofgem’s price cap which runs from 1st July – 30th September 2023. If you have an internal water boiler add 50% to the units consumed.

Weekly Running Costs for Electric Agas

The running costs for electric Aga range cookers are based on the latest unit cost of electricity which is 30p per kWh.

There are a lot of models available and their additional control functionality for only heating certain parts of the cooker at certain times means the costs can be vary greatly from those displayed.

These estimates are for 'traditional' usage of an Aga range cooker, for a family of 4 that like to get some heating from the cooker as well as their meals. If you want to run the cooker like a traditional cooker the costs reduce even more, it's possible to reduce it to around £10.44/week! More info here.

How to Reduce your Aga Running Costs

How much you save depends on how you use your Aga. The best way to save money is to reduce your demand for the fuel that you pay for.

If your primary motivation is 'the greener, demand reduction' choice, then the conversion to a sophisticated electric system is an easy one.

Less easy if your choice is based solely on getting an Aga experience that you are used to as a household, whilst reducing running costs at the same time.

To achieve an 80% saving you will need to have a reduced use. What is reduced use?

  • Follow our best practices
  • If you have decent gaps of time between your points of use put your multi element Aga range cooker on a timer
  • Use the oven floor instead of your hotplates
  • Only use the hotplates when needed, and reduce use to one
  • Adjust your cooking temperatures, only use the heat that you need
  • Use the zones of the Aga that you need when you need, a 3 oven - run it like a 1 or 2 oven, a 4 oven - run it like a 2 oven. Scale up when needed, not as a default position
  • Use your Aga to dry laundry? Get into a routine, and only turn the hotplates on for vertical heat on laundry days, not every day
